Almost three years after we moved back to Holland, we are going back to live on Bonaire for a couple of months. Yay!! Last August we spent four weeks of vacation on Bonaire and we all loved being back. We fully enjoyed the life of fishing, kiting, meeting with friends and playing in the sun. This time will be different from the first time we went. In July 2009 we stepped on an airplane to fly off to an unknown future. We knew nothing and nobody on Bonaire. We rented a vacation home for the first two months and had arranged school for the boys. We had saved (kind of) enough money not to have to worry for a year. That was all. But it’s a small island and it didn’t take us very long to meet new friends and create local job opportunities. It turned out, that our coming to Bonaire coincided with the political transition of Bonaire (together with two other islands Statia and Saba) from the former Dutch Antilles to a new status (special local government) in which it has a tighter bond with the Netherlands. A lot of processes were initiated and we were able to play a role designing, writing, photographing, communicating and campaigning. We stayed for two years before returning to the Netherlands. This time we know the island very well and we have dear friends living there. The boys have grown older and are ready for the challenge of going to (for them) new local schools. We all are very ready to enjoy island life once more.
