We are lucky enough to have these four crazy Venezuelans on our island, Ossie, Rommel, Reinaldo and Silio. Nickname of this bunch is the Venezuelan Kite Mafia and they not only kite themselves, they are also very good at organising the funniest & craziest kite event ever! Last weekend the KITEMANERA was ON on Bonaire.
The name KITEMANERA derives from ‘caimanera’, which is Spanish for playing a sport with friends just for fun, without rules. So, it’s obvious what the main goal of this event is: one happy kite community having fun! It all started with a costumed race in which 70 people participated. From Playboy bunny to Superman, from Little Snow White to Harry Potter and the Joker; a lot of characters were to be found on the water. We were dressed up in morph suits matching the colours of the Venezuelan flag: yellow, blue and red.
Mark and Ties performed well in the Youth Freestyle Competition, Ties even ended up third place. Mark lost his semi-final heat to the later winner. They both rode really cool and continue to be very happy with their Blade kites and Lieuwe boards (even though Ties had to ride with another brand in the finals, since there was too much wind for him on his 7 meter kite).
Awesome was the presence of freestyle pro kiter and former world champion Youri Zoon. In the morning kiting like a girl (dressed up in a little gown) and in the afternoon demonstrating his superb kite skills freestyling on the water.
It was a great, windy, sunny day with a lot of fun people, great catering and the best atmosphere. Thank you Venezuelan Kite Mafia and all the people of the Bonairian kite community, we love you!
We als published an article about the KITEMANERA in the Dutch Kitesurf magazine. You can read it here.
